Faces of Hope: Nicole Quon
This month we introduce you to Fight Cancer Foundation’s John Opie House fundraising committee member, Nicole.
Following a personal experience with cancer Nicole understands the importance of accommodation centres for seriously ill regional Tasmanians. This experience motivates Nicole to do her part in the fight against cancer.
How long have you been involved with Fight Cancer Foundation?
12 months
What do you do for Fight Cancer Foundation? (What does this involve/look like?)
I work with a fellow group of Tasmanians to raise funds for Fight Cancer Foundation’s John Opie House.
My responsibilities include helping to run and promote events in Hobart, and sourcing corporate support from the local community for these events.
How did you become involved?
My good friend Samantha Kanizay is the House Manager of the John Opie House in Hobart and asked if I would like to be part of the committee.
Why do you choose to volunteer your time with Fight Cancer Foundation?
Six years ago I was initially diagnosed with a cancerous tumour behind my ear, which I spent over a week in hospital to have removed. I was one of the lucky ones as the tumour was benign. My journey through this made me realise how challenging it would be if I had lived in a remote location. As the continual hospital visits were already stressful without this added difficulty, the thought of having to worry about where my family (my whole support network) would stay would have just added to the trauma. Being involved with Fight Cancer Foundation’s fun and worthwhile events make me feel like I am giving back.
